Why is it that we let TV traumatise us so much?

I got home last night after a pretty shitty day and picked what show to watch based on the fact that it's usually zero-effort and quite silly.

45 minutes later, I was practically a gibbering wreck - my favourite character on the show had been kidnapped two months previously, they finally found him in this episode and then promptly killed him off. Gah!
