It can be traumatic, and season 2 was horribly so. I think they completely messed up the balance there, to be honest, and a lot of it was pretty horrible. In season 3, they did a much better job of balancing out the light and dark bits, and there is a fair bit of fluff mixed in with all the heavy emotion. And the central love story is just glorious. I do spend a large amount of the time that I watch it crying my eyes out though. That's one of the things I love about it :)
