I have a feeling that this plaint will pass my lips rather too many times this Summer, so I'll let Bill Hicks speak for me and we can move on ...
"Summer time blues is what I have. You know why? Don't like the fucking Summer time. Think it sucks. Hot, sticky, sucks. Hot, sticky, sucks.
People love the Summer time because people are sheep... I don't fucking get it man, I gotta retire all my cool jackets for another fucking season, you know. I don't *have* to do that but I don't wanna be hanging out in a leather jacket, 90 degrees. That aint cool, it's hot and sticky.
Everyone goes to the the beach. I don't get the beach. What's the fucking deal? It's where dirt meets water. I got a bath tub and an imagination, I'm staying in doors this Summer. That way I can listen to music *I* like ...".
(from "Flying Saucer Tour, volume 1").
There's a better version of that on Rant in E minor but I seem to have lost my copy (I've bought it 3 times, and I still don't seem to own a copy. Most annoying). I was lucky enough to see him in 1993, only 6 months before his death, and, for all that his comedy can descend into seething white hot vitriol, I found him compassionate and wise and very, very funny.
It's bizarre to think that I'm now older than he was when he died. "Whom the gods love die young" and all that.

Highlights from the last 3 weeks:-
Voltaire - Although only about 50 people turned up, he played a blinding show. Mostly the funny stuff (I would have liked to have heard a few more of his serious songs), including a couple of his Star Trek spoofs - The Sexy Data Tango ("because I'm fully functional and anatomically correct...") and the USS Make Shit Up - which, even given that I am certainly not the biggest Star Trek fan in the world, are always a giggle (and combined very well with his description of the 'Star Trek Experience' in Las Vegas ("now, I'm a card carrying goth, and I never thought I'd hear myself say the words "this is *too* dark and *too* sexy")). And his brief 'How to dance goth' masterclass was certainly worth seeing.
The best of the supports was a guy by the name of Matt Howden, performing as Sieben, who managed to do some pretty amazing things with a violin and his loopy gizmo, as well as being friendly and wryly funny. Certainly worth checking out on CD, I think.
The first support act, which, let's face it, is always a fairly thankless thing to be, was Novus, which was basically one girl backed by assorted machinery. I felt bad for her for the complete lack of response from the crowd (it was early enough that everyone was still surgically attached to the bar). Admittedly, from the evidence of that particular performance, she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, but she certainly tried.
The crowd was mostly the usual suspects from Midian, gothed up to the nines, which surprised me and meant that, dressed in my day clothes, I felt completely out of place and far too intimidated to even talk to the people I vaguely knew, let alone anyone else. But still a very good night.
Easter - was mostly quiet but very pleasant, and, amazingly considering it involved my entire immediate family, entirely stress free (I never cease to be surprised by the fact that my nieces seem to quite like me. They're very sweet and I do try, but, you know, children - not my favourite things in the world).
And I found time to do a little catching up, and Sunday and Monday included [livejournal.com profile] corone and [livejournal.com profile] lareinemisere, and was therefore most enjoyable.
The last week - has involved exactly one day of work, as I've had a stinking cold, but it's back to the grind stone tomorrow.
I have, however, ordered "What color is your parachute:A practical manual for job hunters and career changers" from Amazon. Because I really need to overcome the inertia that's kept me in the same company for 10 years and figure out if there's anything I actually *want* to do.
