Instead here's another (for me) iconic image, and I'm afraid we're going from one extreme to the other, from a man who would have been 98 this year to a woman, well, a fair bit younger. This is Kaya Scodelario as Effy, or, more to the point, these are Effy's eyes. Because they are utterly beautiful and utterly compelling and quite simply extraordinary. And they are the centre of what she is, because, if Effy does anything, she watches.
This isn't the best picture, but still, you get the idea.
And while I'm on a random Skins post, I'm going to use this as a place to link to some of the best (or at least my favourite) stories in Skins fandom. Anyone who's interested in such things has probably read these already, so I'm really just posting these for my own benefit and I'll be adding to this as I find more, but if you haven't then you really should (![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
pennycrayon87 and myheart999 , you don't have any of these guys on your f-lists, so you may have missed some of these. They're very much worth a look) ...
1) Fate is Overgrown by Sivi
Katie/Effy.
"Every time you dream about Effy Stonem, she’s seventeen with shiny, shot-deer eyes, choking underneath your fingertips. Waking up feels like dying."
This was the story that finally entirely did for my condescending attitude to fan fiction so, if for no other reason than that, it deserves to go at the top of this list. There are other reasons,though. A slow, painful journey from darkness into light, it starts out extremely bleak, to end in glorious romance. I love this so hard it's not even funny.
It is also, unusually for fanfic, very light on smut, although when it does arrive it's really rather lovely (because, amongst all her other talents Sivi writes spectacularly good porn ...)
2) "To Bedlam and Part Way Back" - byjengrrrl
Katie and Effy of the Rock, again.
Currently a work in progress, the link is to part 1 (Her Kind). Follow the tags the other parts.
This takes the same events as FiO for its starting point, but treats them in a very different way. Even bleaker, darker and more painful than Fate is Overgrown, I spent most of the first few chapters just breaking for the two leads. A happy ending in prospect? Who knows, but we can hope.
There's a fair bit of hate!sex in the early parts that, despite being very well written, can be hard to read because it's just so raw.
Bedlam, with transatlanticism (see below) is probably the most famous story in Skins fandom, and deservedly so.
3) The Story of Oink byjengrrrl and Sivi Emily/Naomi
PWP - which is to say smut, smut, smut.
Because it's not all pain, darkness, hate!sex and "infinite choruses of EVERYBODY HURTS" (as Sivi once put it), this is fandom crack at its finest. Simultaneously one of the hottest and funniest things I've ever read. And you'll never look at the lake scene in quite the same way again.
Funniest line: "It would've been a beautiful moment, Emily thought later, had it not been between Naomi and her fucking shirt." And god help me if the last line isn't seared into my brain.
4) transatlanticism by Sivi
Effy/Emily
(The link is to Sivi's 's fic masterlist, where there is much more fabulousness to enjoy).
Like Bedlam, deservedly famous in Skins fandom, this is epic, romantic, funny, hot like burning and very, very painful. It's almost certainly contra-indicated for the devoted Naomily shippers amongst us (in fact, the tag for the first part (Tiny Vessels) is 'Breaking Naomily shippers everywhere'. It's true to its word ... ) but do yourself a favour, compartmentalise a bit, because it is so very worth it ...
5) Only Time To Lose bybotherd
Naomi/Emily
Given that these two are my OTP, there had to be at least one story here that was canon Naomily, and this is a lovely little piece. A perfect balance of romance, drama and angst, wonderfully capturing the desire for a first love to remain unchanged and untouched, protected from the future. Like most of the other stories on this list, this had me crying my eyes out, which is pretty much all I ask.
Just glorious.
6) You are the best part of all the songs I love bytwistomatic
Again, canon Naomily.
It can be rather too easy to overlooktwistomatic when you're immersed in all of the drama and pain of stories like Bedlam and trans, but this is just achingly beautiful. Tender, romantic, and utterly lovely, a perfect glorious prose poem.
There will be additions to this list, because I'm totally addicted ...
