So, I changed service provider, because my connection was intermittent at best and ridiculously slow. And that meant being without the internet for a whole week. And yes, I have limited access at work, and I resorted to cafes with wireless connections a couple of times, but god, it was painful.
I'm not quite sure when the internet stopped being something that was kind of useful for buying out-of-print books on eBay and became an absolute and fundamental necessity of life. I know it happened even before there were people in my life with whom the internet's my main form of communication, but obviously that makes all the difference.
Which is all to say, I don't post all that much, so you probably mostly haven't noticed that I've been gone, but I've missed you guys.
I have so much to catch up on, and so many comments to write. It may take me a while :)


I've just watched the last episode of season 5 of Skins, and I'm going to admit here that both youtoxic and cobalt_siren were right. Somewhere towards the end of the season, Mini went from being utterly vile to completely adorable, and the idea of Franky/Mini (which I was initially utterly repelled by, because Mini was just such an appalling person, especially so to Franky) has taken complete control of my brain. Fic please? Jack, I know you've written some Minky stories. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do there, as well :)

All in all, the last episode actually succeeded in pulling all these disparate people together plausibly and actually starting to make me care about them, individually and as a group. It's a huge shame that that didn't happen earlier on in the season. (There was never really any moment where these characters completely stole my heart, as happened with Gen 2 and, to a lesser extent, with Gen 1), but I'll rewatch at some point, and I'm hopeful that, with hindsight, I'll enjoy it all a lot more than I did the first time round.
Of course, now I actually like Gen 3 I'm more than a little trepidatious about Season 6. For one thing, on past form, the second season of each generation gets the random pointless death of a major character, and even before then, everything generally starts going to shit. I'll be annoyed if they pull out the character death thing again. Been there, done that (the first time (Chris) to great emotional and dramatic effect, the second time (Freddie) pointlessly and stupidly, and serving only to demonstrate total imagination failure). It would be nice if they accepted the fact that sometimes people don't die and tried something new and different.
We'll see, I guess. I'll be watching.
And meanwhile, where's all that Minky fic?

In other news, I totally missed the Doctor Who short when it was on Comic Relief on Friday night. Thank god for Youtube :) . Also l suspect I'll be downloading it from iTunes because AMELIA POND EYE!SEXING HER FIVE-MINUTES-FROM-THE-FUTURE-SELF ♥♥♥ YAY \O/ God bless selfcest is all I can say.
And there was clever science fiction stuff too, of course. BUT EXCUSE ME, IMPORTANT STUFF. DID I MENTION THE AMY/AMY EYE!SEX. I DID? GOOD THEN. (LOL Yes, I am sad. How kind of you to notice :p)

(I really hope Youtube isn't being mean and blocking these outside the UK, cos that would kind of suck :()

Is it bad that I now really want icons of Karen Gillan making out with herself? Probably :/

Totally jealous of your new faster internet. I miss the internet service I had at school terribly. I went from being able to download an episode of something in 7-8 minutes to having it take 45-60 minutes. It's incredibly frustrating.

I think the fact that part of my license fee goes to paying for Doctor Who means that I should get to DEMAND a whole season of Amy/Amy. What d'ya reckon. Do you think Steven Moffat would go for it? :D

You haven't actually missed anything from me.......since I've retired. It has been 12 days and not even a fanfic document open on my computer (although it has meant starting a new original fiction and working on my other two, which has been nice). It does however mean that I will not be writing Minky fics (since I haven't watched most of gen 3 anyway and am generally resentful of the whole 'gen 3 is the best gen ever' bandwagon that I will not be jumping on and cause I've retired). Unfortunately it also means there will probably not be anymore Keffy from me, at least for the forseeable future. Sorry about that smutty one I started for you and never finished. :/

I hope you're doing okay, and thanks for sharing the Doctor Who thing (which does play for out of UK peeps :D). :) Take care. xx

I'm sorry that you feel that way. But hey, 12 days, hardly constitutes retirement! It's more like a break between chapters, well it is the way I write anyway :). It's good that you'r working on your original stuff, though. That's awesome. Let me know how it goes!

I haven't really noticed much in the way of 'Gen 3 is the best'. Certainly the reception seems to have been pretty positive, which is good, you know? The feeling I got before it started was that people were determined to hate it because it was different, and I'm glad that that wasn't the case. All in all, I enjoyed it a lot, although as I've said before it didn't grab my heart like gen 2, or even 1, did. There's really no point in getting resentful. People will feel how they feel. Nothing's going to change that :)

I'll remain hopeful that that smutty little Keffy might get finished one day ;D

My previous retirements have been like 4 days. To me 12 days without writing fanfiction is ages. This one feels more permanent, and I wish I could say I missed it, but truth is I keep feeling better and better about my decision to stop and step away from fandom. *shrug* I guess we all hit our points when we're done or real life just steps in the way.

I have thoroughly enjoyed, dare I say loved, all of season 5 from start to finish. With the possible exception being any thing Matty related. :)
I'm hoping the Skins team have learnt their lessons from the train wreck that was series 4 and won't fuck it up. But I'm not holding my breath.

Amy/Amy EYE!SEX was A.MAZ.ING and totally the highlight of Red Nose Day. I want more of this in the new series. *drools*

I'm loving the new connection. SO much quicker than it was! :)

I was very pleasantly surprised by S5, and certainly the last episode, which tied things together really nicely. But yeah, Matty wasn't exactly the best character. God, even Nick was more likable by the end! And that they wasted so much time on Matty/Franky. Such a crime D:
Nervous about S6, but we'll have to wait and see, I guess :)

We should definitely write to Steven Moffat and demand more Amy/Amy. Preferable the R rated version, with bonus snogging. LOL sorry. I think my brain just melted ;)

Isn't it the complete worst when your work limits your internet access? I have never been so deprived in my LIFE. I'm currently researching ways to get around all those blocks at work, but then I think I might just be better of ACTUALLY WORKING. (fuck that sometimes though.)

They're actually not all that strict where I work. They tried to be for a while, but they saw sense quite quickly. We're a software house, after all, and it's pretty much impossible to do our jobs without decent access to the internet. I have to be very careful though. They kind of object to people spending too much (or any :() time on things like LJ :/.

It took me most of the season to get into the new generation of Skins, but by the end I actually rather liked them all. Like I said, I don't think they'll ever have the same place in my heart that Gen2 does, but they certainly have their moments. I think you can probably still download them all from the links at skinsfans, so if you fancy marathoning them you shouldn't have too far to go :)
A word of warning: Mini is beyond awful in the first few episodes, and she's just appalling to Franky. It's the very epitome of a wrong ship. Somewhere later on though it just all falls into place. It takes a while, but it just happens!

We can only hope that S6 won't go down the drain. To be honest, I'm not all that iffy about character deaths as long as they serve a purpose, which Freddie's didn't even though I was never a big fan of his character (I did sympathise with him a lot more after his S4 ep though). If they kill off someone it'll probably be a girl this time. If they kill off Mini I will never forgive them though. :/ But I don't think they will because Freya's (and Dakota's) performance is what's been carrying the show so far imo.

I have the same opinion about this gen that you do tbh. I like them but don't love them as much as G1-2, but I think by S6 I'll know for sure.

I don't actually have a problem with character death, as such, but Freddie's death showed every sign of being there just because they'd run out of ideas and wanted something dramatic to end the season on. It failed in every possible way, and was badly done to boot. I'm not even sure why I gave it another chance after that, but I'm actually glad I did, so :).
Totally agreed on Freya and Dakota. Gen 3 would be a lot poorer without them. .
