Well, that's another year done with
Dec. 27th, 2009 01:53 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Well, the rest of the family is off seeing St Trinian's, which I actually quite fancy, but, as usual, my darling brother is utterly incapable of not being a dick, so.
I always intend to do this but never get around to it. Right now, though, I have a few hours to myself, and some kind/rather naive/technologically inept person has left their wireless router unencrypted, so I have internet access at my mother's, so here goes.
01. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Formed a genuine friendship with someone I've neither met nor spoken to in real life; joined an internet fandom; finished my first story in ages.
02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make really New Years' resolutions, although I suppose quitting smoking counts. If that's the case, I failed.
Same one for next year.
03. Did someone close to you give birth?
Well, Erica, I suppose. She lives about 10 minutes walk away, so that's pretty close, isn't it? We've only known each other a year or so though, and she's the girlfriend of a gaming acquaintance, so not close in the sense meant here.
04. Did someone close to you die?
Yes.
05. What countries did you visit?
None.
06. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Some sort of romantic relationship, maybe?
07. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
7am June 15 - Started Fate is Overgrown. One of my favourite things ever.
10am October 11 - see question 4.
08. What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?
Actually finishing something that I started writing. This is rare for me.
09. What was your biggest failure(s)?
Not being able to prevent my oldest friend from killing himself. (Yes, I know that's ridiculous, but survivor's guilt is hardly a new concept).
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I have no idea. Lots of books, lots of CDs, lot of DVDs.
If we're talking about the things that had the biggest impact, then almost certainly the seasons 1-3 of Skins.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Tricky to single out any one person, but I'd probably have to go with
alobear,
cholten99,
corone, and
lareinemisere, just for being uniformly fabulous.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Elisa's.
There's no way that "Well, he'll still be dead in 10 minutes, won't he?" will ever stop being the most appalling response to news of a death that I've ever heard.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Books, CDs, DVDs, clothes,
The usual suspects really.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The release of Florence and the Machine's Lungs, maybe.
I rarely get really, really, really excited. Excited maybe, or possibly even really excited, but I'm English, so anything above that level just seems crass :)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same
iii. richer or poorer? About the same
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Smoking
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Trying not to kill my brother.
22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
I have a tendency to crush, and there were definitely a couple of those.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. I wouldn't do one-night stands even if I had the option.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Skins, Battle Star Galactica, Dexter, Being Human, Sugar Rush, Gossip Girl.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I try not to do hate; it's far too damaging.
26. What was the best book you read?
The one I moat enjoyed was probably Blue Bloods (Melissa de la Cruz)., although it's by no means quality literature :D
To be honest I've probably read more fanfiction than anything else this year, and as far as that's concerned, the things I've most enjoyed are probably: Fate is Overgrown and Transatlanticism (
narc_hive), In Keeping Secrets (
flister) and Thank you, You're Welcome (
chekhovsrifle)
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Too many to name, so I'll go with Matthew Good, La Roux, Florence and the Machine and Miles Davies
28. What did you want and get?
Friendship, contentment (neither of which are new, but they're both to be valued).
29. What did you want and not get?
Self-acceptance, emotional equilibrium.
Also, see number 6.
30. Favorite film of this year?
I'm sure I've seen lots of films this year, but absolutely nothing comes to mind. Juno maybe? (although I can't remember if I saw that this year or last).
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
37. On the day I didn't do a hell of a lot (except unblock the kitchen drain. There are less unpleasant ways to spend a birthday). There was clubbing the previous weekend though.
32.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Erm, see number 6 again :)
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
I have no personal fashion concept. Is it black? Then I'll wear it.
34. What kept you sane?
Friends, books, fanfic.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Kaya Scodelario.
My first and only ever celebrity crush
*is deeply ashamed* (in my defense, I fancy her mostly as Effy, and mostly in fanfic as opposed to onscreen.)
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Probably the ongoing fuckups in Afghanistan and Iraq; David Cameron being unutterably and irredeemably vile; Tony Blair being a self-righteous dick.
37. Who do you miss?
Scott and Annabel; Miriam; Mike Jackson (no, not that Michael Jackson)
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Most of the new people I met this year I haven't actually met in real life; I've met a fair few lovely people online though, and I think that still counts.
flister,
smeetie,
siviusx, and
zagury all deserve a mention for being warm, friendly, and generally fabulous people.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Don't get emotionally invested in something over which you have absolutely no control (and if you manage to do this, tell me how).
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"So why, if we can make the plans, can we just not find the time?".
I always intend to do this but never get around to it. Right now, though, I have a few hours to myself, and some kind/rather naive/technologically inept person has left their wireless router unencrypted, so I have internet access at my mother's, so here goes.

Date: 2009-12-27 02:06 pm (UTC)We have the EXACT same fashion concept- "Black? Gimme..."
I know you've had a bit of a tough year (English understatement again?) but you've really seemed to come out of it on top.
And (cue the sappy) I look forward to getting to know you even better in 2010. We started out with our mutual love of all things unholy but there's a lot more to explore.
