Currently I'm playing adoring host to Great Cthulhu himself (well, his avatar anyway, in the form of an evilly cute small green plush) who's on the third leg on his World Domination Tour (as organised by his worshipers at yog-sothoth.com. There'll probably be pictures at some point, if he doesn't drive me mad and eat my soul.
Chris P.'s 40th birthday bash down in The Smoke was lots of fun, if tiring. And next weekend I have another 40 (a joint one this time) down in Stratford on Avon. There'll be camping involved. In England. In May. WHY GOD? WHY? (Need to get me a MUCH WARMER sleeping bag, I think).
V. sleepy now (but at least I have tomorrow off, so yay\o/).
Have a little meme and then it's time for bed.
The Tagging Game.
(I was tagged on Tumblr by cobaltsiren. I'll be posting it there too).
"This tag is to get to know a person behind the blog better.
As with any tagging game there are rules:
Rule 1: Post the rules.
Rule 2: Answer the questions the tagger set for you and in their post and then make 10 new ones.
Rule 3: Tag 9 people and link them to your post.
Rule 4: Let them know you’ve tagged them."
I've no idea if I'm doing this right. I think I'm supposed to answer the new questions, but I like some of the old ones too, so I'll pick and choose.
QUESTIONS:
1) What book had most impact in your life so far and why?
This is always going to be a difficult question for anyone who reads a lot. There's never just one. So:
i) Obviously, there's The Chronicles of Narnia. Despite any issues I have with Lewis (and especially his treatment of Susan), they've been with me since I was 7 years old and I'll never not love them.
ii) The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings basically owned my life for from the time I was 8 or so and for most of my teens and I've recently made my peace with a lot of the problems I had with Tolkien's writing. He's so backward looking (most of his influences came from Old English and Norse sagas and mythology, after all) that he can't really be compared with any particular modern novelist, so to say (as I did for a good while) that he's a good storyteller but a bad writer rather misses the point.
ii) Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. It just fills me full of joy and makes me want to cry, all at the same time. Also, favourite male character in anything ever: Lee Scoresby (it's strange that, when I think about it, the male characters I love are always cut from that same cloth: laconic, honest, loyal, noble, kind of alpha male, but in the best way (see also: Aragorn, and Alaric Morgan from Katherine Kurtz' Deryni books)). And I'll always love Lyra.
iii) As mentioned: the various Deryni books of Katherine Kurtz (another teenage love). I want to have Morgan's babies, just sayin' XD.
iv) Tanith Lee: 'Tale from the Flat Earth' and 'The Secret Books of Paradys'. Beautiful, lyrical and very sexy ...
v) The Power of Three, by Diana Wynne Jones, which I got from the library when I was 8ish. It went out of print then until Harry Potter apparently single-handedly revived children's fantasy. I was so in love with Ayna. She lived in my head for years afterwards (there was a whole imaginary friend/alter ego thing going on there). I was very disappointed, when I reread it years later, to discover that she actually took a back seat to the male characters :( I really didn't remember it like that.
vi) There are others, but that's enough for now.
2) Describe the person you love.
My love life is just too complicated, so I'm going to skip this question.
3) Greatest fic from your ultimate OTP:
My answer here is basically the same as Anna's:-
"Tie between Fate is Overgrown and Bedlam, because Keffy is OTP."
I'll always love Matching-muff Matrimony though, which is a Harry Potter Ginny/Pansy fic and all kinds of sexy, hilarious, snarky awesome (though my Harry Potter OTP's are actually Ginny/Luna and Sirius/Remus).
3) Favorite character ever(movies/books/TV):
Partly answered this already:-
Alaric Morgan (Deryni).
Lee Scoresby and Lyra Silvertongue (HDM).
Effy Stonem (Skins).
Sirius Black (HP).
Harry (Angharad) Crewe (Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword). Gawky, awkward, insecure, introverted. Basically me, but female.
4) What’s your weirdest habit?
No thanks, not in a public post XD
5) Best concert you’ve ever been:
Either James, c. 2002 (basically one big ball of joyous adrenaline), or Fields of the Nephilim c. 2009 (FAVE. BAND. EVER.)
6) Favorite quote:
Too many, and my brain is completely failing me.
I'm very fond of this one from Samuel Becket though:-
"All of old. Nothing else ever. Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
7) A sound that you love:
People whispering, just a little too quiet to actually hear what they're saying. It's just really soothing, and it makes me feel all fuzzy and safe.
8) Describe yourself in five words:
Just kind of average looking XD
(Clearly I'm not up for answering very personal questions tonight.
Anna added some new questions, so maybe I'll do those tomorrow. Not tonight though, cos I'm sleepy and I've had too much gin :/
New Questions:
1) Top 3 OTPs (no cheating with ties!)
2) 3 foods you could eat daily for the rest of your life.
3) Fav vacation/holiday spot
4) Fav genre of literature or fanfic
5) Movie that made you cry the most
6) Fandom you’ve been in the longest and why you stayed
7) Favorite non-fandom/tv/movie/book activity
8) 2 bands that you hate and why, and one band you adore and why
9) A show/movie you love to hate and one you hate to love (besides Glee)
10) Favorite, or most accurate, platitude/cliche
(Anyone who fancies grabbing this and doing it themselves, feel free :)).
***
To finish, I'm reposting these for the third time so I can point a friend on Tumblr to them (and also cos they're awesome and they make me cry, every single time).
First, BEST HP FANVID EVER:
ALL THE FEELS, SERIOUSLY.
And my favourite Game of Thrones one:
*hugs* all
