prunesquallormd: (Effy - Lost in thought)
It's been aaaaages since I last posted. So while I don't really have the energy to write a long post (been going to bed late and waking up at stupid o'clock in the morning for no good reason recently) I have a fairly free evening so I thought I'd check in and say hi.

Random question: what is everyone's problem with comic sans?
I know it's not the most elegant font in the world but it seems to be almost universally loathed and I'm really not sure why. It's not a font I'd choose, admittedly. I tend to go for Arial. Habit, mostly, and I like it. My mum's boyfriend, who's an artist and began his career in the printing trade when pages actually had to be set letter by letter, sings the praises of Gill Sans, and yes, it's elegant and well balanced but, well, there are so many fonts and there's only so much time you can spend thinking about how you want your letters to look.
I don't know. Much like so many things on the internet, it seems to me that someone, somewhere, decided that it's the done thing to despise comic sans and thus it must always be.

Sorry, that was very boring. It's just something I've wondered for a while.

Right now I have the photos I took at Daresbury Church on the August bank holiday uploading. It's taking a while and I know from the few times I've done it that linking photos in photobucket to LJ and DW takes me forever with a stupid amount of trial and error so I'll do that another time (maybe Friday evening. See how I feel). Hopefully some of them have come out ok.
Daresbury is the village where Lewis Carroll's dad was rector and way back in the '30s the parishioners clubbed together to have a stained glass window made with a few of the characters from Alice in the bottom panels and a main panel of Lewis Carroll at prayer with Alice standing beside him. It's really lovely, and the church is gorgeous too.
I only found out about it a couple of years ago. I can't believe I've lived 15 miles away for 20 years and didn't know before. I actually thought the Cheshire Cat was just named completely randomly and didn't even question that it might mean Carroll had some sort of connection to Cheshire.
I'm glad I finally got round to going. It was a lovely afternoon, and while there's not a whole load to see (just the window and a really lovely 12th century church) there's quite a nice little (well, pretty big actually) pub across the way, so it was perfect for an afternoon's visit and a very late pub lunch. There are worse ways to spend a bank holiday.

As I said, photos will be forthcoming, though they're not very good. I have no eye at all. I'm forever jealous of people with artistic talent of, well, any sort really. My photos have always kinda sucked.

My hand is still not great. I'm using a wrist splint for as long as I can bear to wear it and while I can type for longer before it gets really sore the numbness over the knuckles and the catching of the radial nerve at the wrist when I bend it is still as bad. It's only been a couple of weeks though. We'll see how it goes. It might be random nerve damage, I guess, though I don't see where from.
Oh well, there are worse things.

Off to Scotland for a week from Sunday for a lazy week of good company, walking, a little too much gin, and a lot of games. I'm looking forward to it.
I'll probably have no access to the internet *shudder* *twitch*
It'll be fine. I can deal with it ...
